What is the difference between Schottky diode and transient suppression diode?


Schottky diode is a fast recovery diode, which belongs to a low-power, ultra-high speed semiconductor device. Its remarkable feature is that the reverse recovery time is very short (as small as a few nanoseconds), and the forward conduction voltage drop is only about 0.4V. Its workmanship is more sophisticated and expensive than ordinary diodes, but its external performance function is similar to that of ordinary diodes.

The Schottky transistor is a component that parallels the Schottky diode between the triode base and emitter (as shown in the figure below). Triode with this Schottky diode can prevent base oversaturation.

TVs tube: transient voltage suppressor (TVS) is a high-efficiency protection device in the form of diode. When the two poles of TVS diode are impacted by reverse transient high energy, it can change the high impedance between the two poles into low impedance at a speed of 10-12 seconds, absorb up to several kilowatts of surge power, clamp the voltage between the two poles at a predetermined value, and effectively protect the precision components in the electronic circuit from various surge pulses.

It has the following three characteristics:

1. Adding the transient suppression diode to the signal and power lines can prevent the microprocessor or single chip microcomputer from failure caused by instantaneous pulses, such as electrostatic discharge effect, AC power surge and switching power supply noise.

2. Electrostatic discharge effect can release more than 10000v and 60A pulses, which can last for 10ms; However, general TTL devices will be damaged when they encounter 10V pulse of more than 30ms. Using TVS diode, it can effectively absorb the pulse that may damage the device, and eliminate the interference caused by the switch between buses (crosstalk).

3. Placing TVS diode between signal line and grounding can avoid unnecessary noise impact on data and control bus.
